In spite of having five completed films, one of which was featured in the 82nd Academy Award nominations, Melanie Lynskey still retains the position of a working actress, getting nothing but supporting roles that have no chance of her getting properly noticed on Hollywood's radar. The first leading lady role since 'Heavenly Creatures', that of Ginger Whiteacre in 'The Informant', got absolutely no attention whatsoever, lowering the possibility of her profile being raised to the extent that she ought to get an A-list role in a major Hollywood movie. She has resigned herself to being kept in that position by movie executives, but her mindset has been forged by external circumstances. She has no choice but not to think that way, and it is wrong, on every level, for Melanie to be pigeonholed in that way and to be manipulated by casting directors to lower her goals. I also feel that her new agent is letting her down by not taking steps to improve her chances at getting career-building publicity, by means of hiring a publicist on Lynskey's behalf. Seeing Mel's name in big letters near the top of the film poster is still something I want to see, and I will never give up on wishing for this to happen. She is an A-List film leading lady in the making, and Hollywood executives should acknowledge this fully.

In the past, whenever Lynskey showed up at a film festival, it wasm more often than not, only for one film. However, for the first time in her career, two films in which she features, 'Up In The Air' and 'Leaves Of Grass', and one in which she stars, 'The Informant' have extended her presence at Canada's prestigious cinematic festival. This marks the definite shift from making two films a year to three, and it also heralds the most press coverage she has ever been exposed to throughout her fourteen years in film and TV. We can only hope that this will, at long last, open producers eyes to the possibility of getting leading lady parts, and establish her fully on the international movie stage.

As you can see above, for the first time since 'Heavenly Creatures' received its world premiere back in 1995, Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet have attended a showbusiness event together; the New York premiere of 'Away We Go'. With Sam Mendes, Kate's husband, sandwiched inbetween the two actresses, both Lynskey and Winslet both provide a visual representation of how far they have come in their careers: Kate has finally won her Oscar and Melanie has finally secured a lead female role opposite Matt Damon in 'The Informant'.
